Affordable 1/10 Scale Off-Road Racing for Beginners and Experienced Drivers
Plastic & Aluminum Tub Chassis
Open Brushed Motors
Fixed-Timing 21.5T Brushless Option
JConcepts Silver Smoothies
997 Classic Mod is designed as a step above entry-level racing without requiring expensive modern competition vehicles.
Racers can compete with affordable RTR cars, modern assembly kits, classic aluminum-tub race cars, and eligible discontinued vehicles.
Open brushed motors are the primary power option for this class. Factory fixed-timing 21.5T brushless motors are also permitted as a lower-maintenance alternative.
Required JConcepts Silver Smoothie tires limit available traction, encouraging throttle control, vehicle setup, and consistent driving.
Cars for Every Skill Level
From a stock Traxxas Bandit to a classic Team Associated RC10, 997 Classic Mod welcomes a wide variety of affordable and vintage off-road racing vehicles.
1. Official Class Rules

1.2 Chassis Requirements
- Molded plastic or molded composite main chassis are permitted.
- Formed aluminum tub or monocoque main chassis are permitted.
- Flat aluminum plate, machined aluminum plate, graphite plate, and carbon-fiber plate main chassis are prohibited.
- Adding plastic side guards or rails to a flat aluminum chassis does not make it an eligible tub chassis.
- Aluminum and carbon-fiber shock towers, braces, suspension mounts, steering components, and other upgrades are permitted.
- The primary main chassis must retain an eligible tub-style construction.
1.3 Motors and Electronics
Primary Option: Open Brushed Motors
- Open brushed motors, standard 540 or 550 size.
- No motor turn limit.
- Stock RTR brushed motors are permitted.
- Traxxas Titan 12T motors are legal.
- Rebuildable and modified brushed motors are permitted.
- Brushed-compatible electronic speed controls are open.
Alternative Option: Fixed-Timing 21.5T Brushless
- Factory fixed-mechanical-timing 21.5T brushless motors only.
- Hobbywing Justock 21.5T fixed-timing motors are permitted.
- Gravity RC USGT 21.5T fixed-timing motors are permitted.
- Motors must retain their original factory rotor and internal components.
- Adjustable mechanical-timing brushless motors are prohibited, even when set to minimum timing.
- Brushless motors below 21.5T, including 17.5T and 13.5T, are prohibited.
- Brushless ESCs must operate in zero-timing (Blinky) mode.
- ESC boost, turbo, and electronic timing advance are prohibited.
General Electronics Rules
- ESC brand and model are open, subject to the above motor restrictions.
- Gearing is open.
- Gyros, active stability control, traction control, and electronic driving assistance are prohibited.
- Two-wheel steering only.
Our testing at 997 RC Raceway has shown that the stock Traxxas Titan 12T brushed motor can outperform the fixed-timing 21.5T brushless setup on our track.
For this reason, fixed-timing 21.5T brushless motors are permitted without additional weight penalties or gearing restrictions.
1.4 Batteries
- Maximum 2S LiPo battery, charged to 8.4V or less.
- Standard 6-cell and 7-cell NiMH packs are permitted.
- Higher-voltage battery configurations are prohibited.
- LiPo charging and battery handling must comply with track safety rules.

5. Have a Car That's Not Listed?
We encourage racers to bring existing cars, including older, discontinued, and unusual off-road racing vehicles.
If your buggy or stadium truck isn't listed, it may still qualify. Bring the vehicle to 997 RC Raceway or contact the race director with information about its chassis and motor configuration.
997 Classic Mod is designed to keep RC racing affordable, competitive, and enjoyable. You do not need the newest or most expensive race car to participate.
A stock-motor RTR with the correct tires can race alongside classic aluminum-tub vehicles and modern plastic-chassis kits.
It's about driving, setup, and having fun racing!
